What this background remover does

HD BG Remover is a free background remover built around one job: separate the subject from everything behind it, and hand you the result without making you register first. Open the page, drop in a picture and the cutout appears on a checkerboard so you can see exactly which areas are transparent.

The same smiling woman cut out of the beach photo, shown on a transparent checkerboard background.

The cutout is made by BiRefNet, an AI segmentation model that runs on Cloudflare. It was trained to follow fine edges, so hair, fur, fabric fringes and the thin legs of a chair come out far cleaner than a simple colour-based eraser. You do not draw selections or adjust sliders. If the first result is what you wanted, you are finished.

Because the result has no watermark, you can use it straight away for a shop listing, a profile picture, a slide deck or a thumbnail.

Six ways to use the cutout

Once the background is gone, the same page lets you decide what goes behind the subject. These are the six presets:

  • Transparent: keep the cutout on an empty background and export a transparent PNG. See the transparent background tool.
  • White: put the subject on plain white, the standard for marketplace photos. See white background.
  • Any colour: type a hex code or pick a swatch to match a brand or a theme.
  • Your own image: upload a second picture and place the subject on top of it. See background changer.
  • Blur: keep the original scene but soften it behind the subject, with a strength from 2 to 30. See blur background.
  • Batch: queue several photos at once and download them together as one zip. See bulk background remover.

Where your photos go

The tool does not ask for anything until you choose a file. When you do, the image travels over an encrypted connection to the site's server, the background is removed there, and the result comes straight back to your screen. The site does not save or keep images. Location and camera metadata are stripped from the copy that is sent, so GPS coordinates in a phone photo are not passed along.

Everyone gets a free daily allowance of 30 images. Images up to 20 MB and 4096 pixels on the long side are processed at full size, and larger ones are scaled down first so they still go through.

Pick the page that matches your task

All of these pages use the same engine, but each is set up for a different job. If you only want the fastest route, go to BG Remover. If you think in terms of erasing, the background eraser page also covers the Android app. Need a high-resolution file or a step by step walkthrough? Open remove background from image. The companion Android app, Background Eraser, adds object removal and image expand on top of background removal.
